Keynote Recordings of Cal OER August 3-5, 2022 Now Available

The 2022 Cal OER Conference was held virtually August 3 鈥 5, 2022. For the second year, the conference brought OER college and university practitioners from across the state (and country) to share information and strategies to advance the use of OER in higher education. The keynote presentations and the higher education system updates are now available on the .

 

Student Voices

The OERI is pleased to announce the availability of the ASCCC OERI Student Impact Toolkit. The Toolkit was developed by a team of OER Liaisons and is intended to facilitate the gathering and sharing of student perspectives related to both OER and ZTC.

 

Access to download the Toolkit, learn about the project, and access openly-licensed videos of students discussing their OER and ZTC experiences.

Biology Images

The is currently populated with over 500 openly licensed images. The anatomy and botany projects that were previously funded by the OERI involved the creation of hundreds of images. These images are essential for biology, and there were large gaps for these relatively specialized fields. The OERI is looking to add additional openly licensed images to the OERI Flickr account.  

California Consortium for Equitable Change in Hispanic Serving Institutions Open Educational Resources (CC ECHO)

is implementing a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion [DEI] framework for OER to design 20 high impact courses. Consortium members include West Hills College Lemoore, College of Marin, Allan Hancock College, and College of the Canyons, all of which are Hispanic Serving Institutions. OERI Facilitated Projects

The ASCCC OERI鈥檚 1st 鈥渇acilitated projects鈥 are in their final stages of review, revision, and refinement. and were developed by faculty teams recruited by the OERI. Both draft texts are now available in LibreTexts for consideration by faculty. Faculty feedback is desired 鈥 please share with appropriate faculty.

 

Creative Commons Training

The licenses that are used to identify resources as 鈥渙pen鈥 are provided by , a nonprofit that also provides training on the appropriate use of the licenses. The ASCCC OERI is in conversation with a nonprofit organization that would like to provide an opportunity for a small group of faculty to earn the Creative Commons Certificate. At present, a week-long Creative Commons 鈥渂oot camp鈥 is likely to be held in January. If you are interested, as it will be used to distribute information as it becomes available.

 

OERI Seeking Discipline Leads

The ASCCC OERI is recruiting faculty to support our OER advocacy efforts by serving as Discipline Leads during the 2022-2023 academic year. Each Discipline Lead will serve as a resource for their discipline colleagues and will typically host at least one virtual event each term. Additional tasks of each Discipline Lead will be determined by the status of OER in the discipline. Discipline Leads receive a stipend of $500 at the end of each term upon completion of their specified tasks.

Open for Antiracism 鈥 Webinar and Opportunity

The OERI is pleased to offer a special webinar at the end of August on the Open for Antiracism program, often referred to as OFAR. The program, encompassing OER, open pedagogy, and antiracism, provides faculty with knowledge to use open to transform the classroom and guides them in the development of a plan to make it happen.

 

Open for Antiracism: Supporting Educators to Use Open Education for Antiracist Teaching

  • Wednesday, August 31, 3:00 pm 鈥 4:00 pm
  • Launched in 2020, the Open for Antiracism (OFAR) program engages and supports California Community College faculty in transforming their classrooms to be antiracist by leveraging OER and open pedagogy. Participating teams of faculty will join a community of practice learning about antiracist pedagogy in the fall through an asynchronous facilitated online course. Spring semester will be dedicated to implementing those new practices in the classroom with coaching and peer support. Entering its third year, OFAR will continue to emphasize institutional impact along with support for student leadership. Join us to hear about research results from past years and how you can apply for the program.

 

OERI Events 鈥 September OERI Friday Forums

 

The OERI Friday Forums will be held from 10:30 am 鈥 11:30 am on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month, provided there are no scheduling conflicts (e.g., a holiday). Due to Labor Day, September鈥檚 OERI Friday Forums will be on the 2nd and 3rd Fridays. These webinars are archived. The ASCCC OERI will provide automated captioning for all webinars. If you would like to request live human closed-captioning for any of our offerings, please contact us by e-mail at least 10 business days in advance.

The ZTC Program 鈥 An Overview

  • In July, the Chancellor鈥檚 Office released a memo outlining the phasing of disseminating $115 million for ZTC. What will be required in Phase 1? And what can we expect in Phase 2? In this webinar, a representative from the Chancellor鈥檚 Office will provide an overview of the ZTC Program and answer your questions.

 

ZTC Via OER 鈥 What do the data say?

  • OER is one way to alleviate textbook costs for students 鈥 but is it the best way? Other than the benefit of being free, are there data to demonstrate increased student success when ZTC is achieved by using OER? Colleagues from across the state will share their research findings with respect to this question.

 

CCCCO Events 鈥 XB 12 and the ZTC Program

  • As announced in the July 29, 2022 鈥溾 memo that was distributed via email, the California Community Colleges Chancellor鈥檚 Office (CCCCO) will be holding webinars and office hours to provide information regarding the new instructional materials cost section-level data element (XB 12) and the ZTC Program. As the OERI receives new information about the data element and the program, it will be shared on our page.
